Farmland prices rise steeply

Farmland prices continued to gather momentum towards the end of last year says a new report from RICS

Farmland prices rose at the fastest rate ever in the second half of 2007 according to The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Prices rose by the unprecedented amount of 27.9% compared to 22.6% in the first half of the year, partly driven by the lack of supply and record City bonuses from lifestyle buyers.

Green belt laws ‘QUASHED’ for homes go-ahead

The government has been accused of snubbing the council to give the green light on the largest ever housing development in the borough.

Leader of Bromley council, Stephen Carr, said he is 'horrified' that the massive property development on Blue Circle sports ground, Bromley Common, has been given the go ahead.

He said that the approved Asprey Homes development on 34 acres of green belt land, flies in the face of what the public want.

Thousands of homes to be built on Green Belt

Tens of thousands of homes and offices could be built on protected Green Belt land across England, a Government-backed report said yesterday.

It called for local and regional authorities to conduct a wholesale review of Green Belt boundaries, which have prevented the sprawl of towns and cities since the 1950s, as part of the biggest shake-up of planning policies for decades.

Kate Barker, a member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee and the report's author, said the population was set to rise to 55 million by 2026 — partly as a result of record immigration.

She called for more land to be released for housing, particularly in areas where house prices were the highest.

Britain 'being stifled' by nimby rules

BRITAIN is being held back by "nimby" attitudes that prevent the construction of houses, shopping centres, offices and factories, a report commissioned by Gordon Brown will say this week.

The Barker review of land use planning, chaired by Kate Barker, a member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, has found Britain has twice the amount of "protected" land as other industrial countries, despite having one of the highest densities of population.
